Back to news > Access to Justice Action Group Update
Undoubtedly, you will be aware of the effects of the current legislation which is progressing through Parliament, implementing the proposals outlined by Lord Justice Jackson. There is still time to make representations to MPs before the Bill is enacted, so it is important to ensure this is done as quickly and effectively as possible, to minimise the impact on access to justice for genuine claimants.
One of the best ways to maintain the political pressure is to join the Access to Justice Action Group (AJAG), which is campaigning to provide a united response to the proposals. 80e continues to wholeheartedly support AJAG’s campaign and we strongly urge everyone to get involved, however possible. If you haven’t done so already, please become part of AJAG’s campaign to support access to justice for claimants as well as those, like yourself, who make access to justice possible.
Recently, AJAG prepared a couple of briefing documents to highlight some of the implications of the legislation. The first is a response to the ABI’s mythology about the effects of the current “no win no fee” system on car insurance premiums; and the second is a note outlining the potential effects which the legislation could have for individuals and small businesses in relation to non injury claims, such as contract disputes and professional negligence matters.
Both briefing notes can be found in the Documents section of the 80e website by following this link: https://www.80e.com/documents/
AJAG is interested in case studies so if you deal with business litigation in your firm and have some examples of relevant cases, please send them to tom@ajag.co.uk so they can use this to help demonstrate the potential impact of the legislation.
AJAG is now in the most intensive part of their campaign, as the Bill is in committee stage in the House of Commons. They need to continue their work of drafting and arranging tabling of amendments, briefing and lobbying MPs on the details, as well as increasing press and PR activity, in advance of the Bill going to the House of Lords.
AJAG has delivered a lot with the donations they have had so far. Whilst they will never hope to match the millions the ABI are throwing into their campaign, they can match them with the energy and enthusiasm required to conduct the necessary research and investigation needed to present a valid argument in response.
Therefore, financial support for the campaign is now more important than ever. If you have already donated, then AJAG is very grateful but please consider if you can afford to give more. If you have not yet donated to the campaign then please do so now! Do not assume someone else will foot the bill for AJAG’s work - without financial support, AJAG will not be able to continue the fight for your clients’ rights to access to justice, your business and your staff’s jobs.
